Howard M. "Red" Segars, 83, died after a brief illness, Tuesday, October 21, 2003 at his Palo Pinto home.Mr. Segars was born February 8, 1920 in Mingus, Texas, son of the late Ban and Eunice Stallings Segars. Segars, affectionately known as "Red" or "Handsome Howard" by a host of friends, was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and brother. He married his beloved bride of 63 years, Allie Harberthur, on August 10, 1940. Segars helped Charter Masonic Lodge 1404, was a member of the Scottish Rite, York Rite, and a Shriner. He was a Master Mason since 1946 and continued his support of these organizations for over 50 years. He was extremely active in Meals on Wheels and served the Senior Center in many positions of leadership on its Board of Directors. "Red" was an active member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and served in the vestry in many positions including Senior Warden. He always led the pack in ticket sales for church fund-raisers such as the Chili Supper and Fish Fry each year. He served the Brad Cemetery Association for many years."Red" served his country as a member of the U.S. Army including a three-year tour of duty in the South Pacific during World War II."Handsome Howard" lived an interesting and varied life, dragging Allie all over the U.S. working as a mortician, pipeliner, and finally as proud proprietor of "Red's Drive In" in Palo Pinto for 20 years until his retirement in 1982. After retirement he enthusiastically and generously gave himself to his church, many organizations, and the community. He cannot be replaced and will be greatly missed.The family expresses special thanks to Drs. "Red" is survived by his wife, Allie Segars; son, Michael Segars and wife, Tami of Fort Worth; daughter, Linda Trachet and husband, Ed of San Clemente, CA; grandchildren, Ryan Segars of Mineral Wells, Brittany, Tanner, and Skyler Segars of Fort Worth, Shawn and Erin Tracht of San Luis Obispo, CA, and Courtney Tracht of San Clements, CA; brother, Joe Segars of Austin; sister, Ruby Tucker of Wichita Falls.
