Oneeta Culwell Hinkle

d. February 14, 2006

Oneeta Gilliland Culwell Hinkle, 90, our mother, grandmother, sister and friend, left this earth to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2006, in Azle. Oneeta was born Aug. 21, 1915, near Springtown. She married her childhood sweetheart, J.B. Culwell, on May 9, 1932, in Marietta, Okla. From this union, five children were born, Clarence W., Bob L. and Larry G. Culwell, Polly J. Blackman and Clark Lee Culwell, who died two days after his birth. Oneeta and her family lived in Springtown, farming until moving to Weatherford in 1948. She worked at Ben Franklin's until the family moved to Jacksboro in 1953. They purchased and ran a small five-and-dime store called Culwell's Department & Variety store until they retired in 1967. The family moved back to Springtown in 1968. In 1996, Oneeta married Leonard Hinkle. Oneeta spent most of her life in sales, but her real love was her family. She was a loving mother and grandmother who taught her children to pray every day, love your family, work hard, make light of your troubles, follow the Golden Rule, read from the Bible, show kindness, read worthwhile books, be clean and pure, have charity in your heart, be obedient and respectful, and be proud of your name. Oneeta was a lifetime member of First United Methodist Church. She was active in the Senior Citizens Center, fundraising and playing dominos. Oneeta was an avid quilter, and had her recipe, Jacksboro Cafe lemon chess pie, published in the Star-Telegram on Aug. 20, 2003. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe; second husband, Leonard; parents, Clarence and Alice Gilliland; and brothers, Reed and Howard Gilliland. Survivors: Sons, Clarence Culwell and wife, Ola, Bob Culwell and wife, Sue, Larry Culwell and wife, Rita, and Max Hinkle and wife, Sharon; daughter, Polly Blackman and husband, Bob; sister, Billie Williams; 12 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
