Obadiah D. "Obie" Beene, 106, went to be with his Savior on Thursday, April 6, 2006 in Weatherford.Mr. Beene was born in the Carter Community on December 17, 1899, and was raised in Parker County, Texas. He attended schools at Carter and Union until the time of his father's death in 1918, after which he quit school to help his mother take care of his younger three brothers and two sisters still living at home. Obie's mother was killed in a car accident in 1934 leaving Obie to run the family farm until 1937.Obie Beene was a man of many talents and professions. He sold appliances for Kemble Brothers, Good Housekeeping Shop, and Stripling's Department Store in Fort Worth. Obie also served in the United States Army. At various times, he was a carpenter, painter, and beekeeper. Obie married Gertrude Baker on March 8, 1952, and she preceded him in death in 1987.Obie was a member of the Union Baptist Church for 70 years before joining First Baptist Church of Weatherford after his marriage to Virginia Peace Martin on September 15, 1990. He was also a 55 year member of the IOOF Lodge #251 in Fort Worth where he as a Trustee for 30 years.Obie was a good gardener, and he enjoyed playing all kinds of games including canasta and "42" with his family and friends.Mr. Beene is survived by his wife, Virginia Beene; stepson and wife, Donald Ray and Deborah Martin; stepdaughter and husband, Dianne and Jerry Don Morrow; step-grandchildren, Andrea and Barrett Potts, Donald Ray Martin Jr., and Jeff Morrow; and many nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces.Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, April 10, 2006 at the First Baptist Church of Weatherford, 221 W. Church Street, Weatherford 76086 with burial following in the Central Cemetery. The family will receive guests 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at White's Funeral Home in Weatherford.In lieu of flowers donations are requested to the Weatherford Senior Center, Meals on Wheels, 1225 Holland Lake Drive, Weatherford, Texas 76086.
