Vivian Sears "Sister Mutt" Streater was born on October 8, 1908 and joined her Heavenly Father on February 18, 2007.A memorial service to celebrate Vivian's grand life will be held at the Central Christian Church, 1602 S. Main Street, Weatherford, Texas 76086 at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 21, 2007.Vivian was the eldest daughter of Arthur and May Sears of Abilene, Texas. The Sears were a pioneer ranching family in west Texas. She grew up in Abilene and after graduating from high school she attended Texas Women's University, Texas Christian University, and California Art Institute. In 1932 she married Gorham Streater of Lake Charles, Louisiana. They returned to Louisiana in 1942 and made Lake Charles their home for 45 years. During those years Vivian was a community volunteer and was involved in all of children's activities. She was a Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader and active PTA volunteer. For several years she worked for the Beaumont Enterprise covering the Lake Charles social life.Having come from dry west Texas, southern Louisiana was a challenge that Vivian quickly conquered. She became entrenched in all of the new southern social graces, cooking Creole dishes, loving her husband's large family, and making a home that was welcome to all. In their retirement, "Skeeter" and Viv traveled extensively in their motor home meeting wonderful new friends and seeing new sights. In 1976, they bought a part-time home on Lake Granbury. Once again they made multitudes of new friends while they continued their love of boating. Their grandchildren and friends were especially welcomed on the boat to fish or ski. After the death of Skeeter in 1986 Viv closed her home in Lake Charles and moved permanently to Decordova Bend Estates in Granbury. This move made her visits back to her beloved Abilene more frequent. She continued playing bridge and joined the Wednesday Club. She was a member of the Acton United Methodist Church. She cherished her volunteer work at the Granbury library.Vivian was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, older brother Lance Sears of Sweetwater, younger sisters, Mollye Bye of Marble Falls, Jewel Laughter Hodge of Abilene, and Margaret Brown of Abilene, son-in-law, Don Denbow of Weatherford, and nephew, Dan Laughter of Abilene.Viv will be remembered for her fierce independence, keen intelligence, sharp sense of humor but most importantly her love of her family and God.She is survived by sons, Dr. D.N. "Nick" Streater and wife, Bettye of Houston, D. Gerald "Gerry" Streater and wife, Joyce of Hurst; and daughter, Jane Denbow of Weatherford.
