Martha Lee Smith, 84, a loving mother and grandmother, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008, at James L. West Community Hospice of Texas. Graveside service will be private in Memory Gardens of the ValleyMemorial Park, 5600 Mineral Wells Highway, Weatherford. Memorials: The Smith family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in Martha's name to CommunityHospice of Texas, 6100 Western Place, Suite 500, Fort Worth, Texas 76107. Martha Lee Smith was born in Eldorado, Ark. on Feb. 27, 1923,daughter of the late Charles Justin and Lillian Gay Doughty Eddlemon. Martha was a very generous and giving person of her time in many ways. She was a former executive director of Manna and was also selected as Volunteer of the Year for Family Service Hospice. She also generously gave of herself as a mentor for students at Millsap and Weatherford elementary schools. Martha did not like a lot of recognition but instead preferred to work quietly in the background. There were many things in Martha's life that brought her joy; poetry, nature, cooking and flowers were among her favorites. Her love of cooking really showed during the holidays when Martha would prepare wonderful meals for her family she so dearly loved. Martha was preceded in death by her son, Michael Payne, in 1962; parents; brother; and three sisters. Survivors: Daughters, Nancy Thurman of Weatherford, Alyce Jacobs of Fort Worth, and Deborah Hughes of Weatherford; son, Trey Roach of Fort Worth; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of loving friends.
