John Herbert Holmes passed away Sunday, September 6, 2009 in Fort Worth. Service: 2:00 P.M. Saturday, September 12 at Azle Christian Church. Interment: Ash Creek Cemetery. Visitation: 5 to 7 P.M. Friday at White's Azle Funeral Home. Herbert was born in Eldorado, Oklahoma May 26, 1919. His family traveled to Texas and Herbert lived the majority of his life in Azle. He honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corp in World War II, surviving the Battle of Iwo Jima. After World War II he worked for Convair which became General Dynamics and is now Lockheed Martin. Herbert retired in 1982 after 35 years of service. After his retirement, he and his wife, Billie delivered cars for the Tandy Corporation of Fort Worth all over the United States. He loved to travel and saw the majority of the United States as well as many foreign countries. Herbert loved the Azle Opry and the Springtown dances. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 62 years, Billie Jeayne Floyd Holmes; daughter-in-law, Janie Wiley Holmes; brother, Kenneth Wayne Holmes; and great-grandson, Charles Zion Greathouse IV. Survivors: daughters, Betty McNeill and husband, Charles, Gloria J. Solis and husband, Michael; son, John Wayne Holmes; brothers, Marshall Holmes and wife, Vonnie, William Holmes and wife, Darlene; sister-in-law, Darlene Holmes; brother-in-law, John William Floyd and wife, Anne; sister-in-law, Juanita McCurdy; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
