SAVANNAH, GEORGIA -- Velma Barnes Pennington, 93, of Savannah, Georgia, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2009 at the residence of her daughter. Funeral: 11 a.m. Wednesday at White's Funeral Home. Burial: East Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation: 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials: Building Fund, in care of The Sanctuary, 8912 Whitfield Ave, Savannah, Georgia 31406. She was born in Van Alstyne (Grayson County), and moved to Savannah, Georgia in 2000. Her husband, Rev. Lonnie Clyde Pennington, who died in 1969, preceded her in death. She worked with him in his ministry, pastoring churches in Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas. She was a longtime member of North Main Church of God in Weatherford and attended The Sanctuary in Savannah, Georgia, where she was a member of the Trailblazers Senior Citizens Group. She is survived by daughters, Letha P. Hammond (Dr. Hugo Hammond), of Savannah, Georgia and Chrystene Byrom of Port Neches; brother, Billy R. Barnes of Colorado City; sisters, Mary Lay of Sherman and Nina Smith of Van Alstyne; seven grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and many great-great-grandchildren.
