Gwendoline Ellen "Gwen" Owens, 104, passed away Monday evening, Feb. 1, 2010, at Holland Lake Nursing Home surrounded with loving family. Funeral: 10:00 a.m. Friday at Lakeshore Drive Baptist Church, 200 S. Lakeshore Dr., Weatherford. Interment to follow in Memory Gardens of the Valley. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at White's Funeral Home. Gwendoline Ellen Jones was born to Owen Edward Jones and Mary Charlotte Davies Jones on October 26, 1905 in Trealow, Wales. They left Wales on May 1, 1920, landed at Ellis Island on May 13, 1920. They went to Scranton, PA. There was an English Congregational Church where they attended the first Sunday after their arrival. That Sunday at church, Gwen met her future husband, Benjamin Thomas Owens. On September 22, 1923, Ben and Gwen were married in Scranton, PA where they resided. Ben served in World War II in Belgium, France and Germany. In 1945, after the war, not wanting to raise sons in the coal mines, Ben moved Gwen and their four children to Weatherford, until 1960 when they moved to Kingsland in the Hill Country. They resided there until 1975 when they moved to San Benito until 1996 when they moved back to Weatherford. Ben passed away on the couple's 76th Anniversary in 1999. Besides Ben, Gwen was preceded in death by daughters, baby Mary and June Morris; her parents; two brothers, Leonard Jones and Raymond Jones; and sister, Muriel Driskoll. Survivors include her sons, Owen Owens and wife, Addie of Houston, Dan Owens of Weatherford, Jim Owens and wife, Barbara of Weatherford; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren who are, Lynn Morris of Kingsland, Jan Morgan, her daughters, Julie and Jessica and her baby, Mia June of Anchorage, Alaska and son Sean Michael Houran of St. Hedwig, Joseph Owens and wife, Stacy and their children Jordan, Corey and Katelyn of Weatherford, John Owens of Dallas, Glyn Owens of Houston, Karen Domel and husband, Neal, Janice Podell and husband, Markus and son Peyton, all of Ft. Worth, Rachel Owens Matthews and husband, Robert and daughter, Amanda of Hillsboro, and Felicia Owens South and husband, David and son, Zakk of Arlington; sister, Tonwen Serge and sister-in-law, Evelyn Jones, both of Scranton, PA; and many nieces and nephews.
