WEATHERFORD -- Mildred Malone Woodrum, the reigning Ms. Senior Parker County, died at a local assisted living facility Friday, March 26, 2010. Service: 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Weatherford. Viewing: 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at White's Funeral Home. Memorials: The family requests memorials may be made in Mrs. Woodrum's memory to First Baptist Church of Weatherford, 306 Palo Pinto, Weatherford, Texas 76086. Mildred Malone Woodrum was born June 1, 1912, in Whitesboro. Her family moved to Weatherford in 1925. She graduated from Weatherford High School in 1929 and Weatherford College in 1930. In 2009, Mrs. Woodrum was one of 10 contestants in the Ms. Senior Parker County Pageant on May 31. She not only won the talent portion of the competition, but also received a standing ovation when she was named overall winner, one day before her 97th birthday. Mrs. Woodrum was a recipient of the Weatherford College Alumnus of the Year award in 2009. Her professional affiliations include memberships in Texas Classroom Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma International Association, American Association of University of Women, North Fort Worth Woman's Club and Parker County Retired Teachers Association. In 2008, she received recognition from the Brewer High School Bears football team for assisting in writing the music for the school's alma mater and composing and writing the Brewer High School fight song. Mrs. Woodrum considered teaching her calling and began her 37-year teaching career in Parker County. She received her bachelor of science degree in 1940 and her master of science degree in 1942 from the University of North Texas. In 1966, she earned her master of arts degree from Texas Christian University. She retired as coordinator and head of the English department at Brewer High School in 1977. Until recently, Mrs. Woodrum wrote a weekly religious column for the Weatherford Telegram and volunteered at First Baptist Church in Weatherford. Mrs. Woodrum was preceded in death by her husband, J.B. Woodrum; her parents, F.E. and Vera Malone; brothers, Edwin Malone and James Malone; nephew, Ed Malone; and niece, Ann Malone Cooksey. Survivors: Nieces, Gale Malone Bradford and husband, Bob, of Weatherford and Patricia Malone Plant of Spring; nephew, Mike Malone and wife, Ann, of Houston; and several great-nieces and great-nephews, including Kyle Cooksey of Franklin, Tenn.
