Raymond E. Curtis, 83, longtime Weatherford Independent School District superintendent and community leader, died Friday, July 23, in a Fort Worth hospital facility. Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 27 at North Side Baptist Church, 910 North Main, Weatherford. Interment: Allen Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. Visitation: 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, July 26, at White's Funeral Home, 130 Houston St. Weatherford. Mr. Curtis was born January 29, 1927 in Allen, Texas. He came to Weatherford in 1954 after a two-year stint in the United States Navy and graduation from University of North Texas in 1949. He served as superintendent of Allen ISD from 1950 to 1954. Mr. Curtis served as Weatherford ISD superintendent until his retirement in 1986. For 10 years, he was president of Weatherford Chamber of Commerce and was named Outstanding Citizen of the Year in 1977. He was a member of the Texas State Teachers Association, a member of the Texas and National Associations of Secondary School Principals, and a life member of the Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers. He was a past president of the Rotary Club, served on the board of directors and budget committee of United Fund, was a member of Knights of Pythons, Lone Star Lodge Number 4, and an active member of North Side Baptist Church. Mr. Curtis served as a member of the board of trustees for Weatherford College from 1991 to 2003. He was a founding member of several local education agencies and a member of the Parker County Crime Commission. Mr. Curtis was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, in 1987. He is survived by son, Charles Curtis and wife, Elaine, of Winchester, VA. and son, Paul Curtis of Weatherford; two grandchildren, Brenton Curtis and Marie Curtis, of Winchester, VA.
