Virginia Bernice Peace Martin Beene

Virginia Martin Beene passed away at her Martin Crest Assisted Living home on Friday, May 13, 2011. Graveside service: 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 17, at Memory Gardens of the Valley, Weatherford. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at White's Funeral Home, Weatherford.Virginia Bernice Peace was born July 15, 1920, in Tyler, TX, daughter of the late Benjamin and Nellie Ford Peace. She attended Tyler schools and married Jeff Monroe Martin on March 2, 1940. The Martins moved to Weatherford in 1950 where Virginia worked for Safeway Stores from 1956 until her retirement in 1986. She and Jeff were active members of First Baptist Church of Weatherford. She always loved working in the yard and had many beautiful blooms as a result. Virginia also enjoyed watching the many birds that flew into their back yard. Virginia and Jeff played 42 and 84 with friends from First Baptist Church, and she also enjoyed playing canasta with other close friends. She enjoyed traveling with her family as well as going on many bank- and church-sponsored trips with friends. "Granny" spent many evenings counting "lightning bugs" with all her grandchildren from her front porch steps. She enjoyed watching granddaughter Andrea compete in barrel races across North Texas; rode all the wild rides at Six Flags with grandson Don; and picked up golf balls, pecans and cans on walks with grandson Jeff. After Jeff's death, Virginia was married to Obadiah "Obie" Beene of Weatherford for 15 years until his death at the age of 106 in 2006. Obie and Virginia continued growing beautiful flowers and vegetables. She also helped him with his "honeybee business." Virginia moved into Martin Crest Assisted Living on its first day of operation in 2007 and truly loved all the special care partners who were always there for her "at the click of a button"--and it clicked a lot! Chicken Foot and Bingo were her favorite activities at Martin Crest. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; by husbands Jeff Martin in 1987 and Obadiah Beene in 2006; and sister, Ann Benton.Survivors: Sister, Kathryn LeGros of Houston; son, Donald Ray Martin and wife, Deborah, of Weatherford; daughter, Virginia Dianne Morrow and husband, Jerry Don, of Azle; grandchildren, Donald Ray Martin Jr. of Kansas City, MO; Andrea Morrow Potts and husband, Barrett, of Arlington; Jeff Russell Morrow and wife, Reagan Woody Morrow, of Colorado Springs, CO; great-grandchildren, Kylie and Lexi Potts of Arlington; Gage and Macie Morrow of Colorado Springs; niece Barbara Owens and husband, Jim, of Weatherford; as well as many other special nieces and nephews and dear Martin Crest friends.
