J. Carl Causey, 84. Carl was born to his parents, Eugene and Mabel Causey, in their house just outside of Hadley, Kentucky on November 28, 1931. He was the youngest of six children, five of whom (John Causey, Madeleine Causey Goss, Charlotte Causey Meredith, and William Causey) survived and remained close throughout their adult lives.
Carl was graduated from College High, Bowling Green, Kentucky, in 1949 and first came to Texas—where he would live for the rest of his life—when he was drafted into the Air Force on December 24, 1951. From 1952 until 1956, he proudly served his country. He was stationed primarily in Waco, Texas; after he was honorably discharged from the service, he studied Journalism at Baylor University.
It was at Baylor that he met his wife, Jo Ann Jones. The two were married on February 18, 1961 and they enjoyed a remarkable fifty-four year marriage. Carl and Jo Ann raised two children: Julie Causey Brown, who lives in Weatherford, Texas with her husband Dr. Steve Brown, and Joel Causey, who now resides in New Orleans with his wife, Kim Otto Causey. Carl was also the proud grandfather of Rebekah Brown, who currently resides in Austin, Texas and Ben Brown, who now makes his home in Fort Worth. He was extremely proud that his two children and both of his grandchildren were graduated from Baylor University.
Carl’s professional life was rooted in the Texas irrigation industry. In 1974, he earned one of the State of Texas’ very first irrigator’s license. Two years prior to that, he had already begun his lifelong association with the Texas Turf Irrigation Association; he maintained that membership through the rest of his life. He was named Vice President of the association in 1974, and he then served as President in 1977. In 1983, the TTIA honored him as its Irrigator of the Year. He also served as the editor of the TTIA’s quarterly newsletter from 1975-1987. In 1989, the State of Texas appointed Carl to the Texas Board of Irrigators, and he then served as that board’s President from 1991 until 1993. He also served one year as a member of the state’s Natural Resource Commission. In 2008, Carl was the first TTIA member ever to be named as a permanent member of the association’s Irrigation Advisory Council.
Carl served faithfully for many years as a volunteer at the Center of Hope, and was also extremely proud to be a member of Trinity Bible Church in Willow Park, Texas. A memorial service will be conducted in his honor there at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 12. In lieu of flowers or gifts, his family requests that memorial gifts be sent to:
