WEATHERFORD -- Robert A. Mathews, 88, passed away Sunday, January 24, 2016.
Memorial service: 1 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church.
He was born in Dallas on April 17, 1927. The family moved to Maryland, where he graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School. Robert served in the U.S Navy during World War II and upon completion of his Naval service he returned to Texas and entered Texas A&M, graduating in 1951.
He spent 30 years in the insurance claims business, working for various companies including Commercial Standard, Hartford, Travelers, Reserve Life, Crum and Forester, GEICO, and USAA. He enjoyed flying, held a Commercial pilots license and flew for sixty plus years. He was active in the Civil Air Patrol working with the Cadet Program and flying Search and Rescue missions. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Robert was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Mary; son, Robert Mathews, Jr.; parents, George N. Mathews and Dorothea Mathews; sisters, Dorothy Stratton and Patsy Berry; and brother, George Mathews, Jr.
Survivors: Children, Mariney Shackelford and husband, Barney, and Leigh Ann Acker and husband, Rick, both families residing in Springtown; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two nephews; and five nieces.
