Robert Calvin Murry, Jr.

Robert Calvin Murry, Jr., 73, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on February 19, 1942, and died peacefully in a hospital in Fort Worth, on February 8, 2016. Memorial service: A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 13, at 1 pm. Please contact the Murry family for details. Robert "Bob" grew up on a small farm in the Hill Country of central Texas near Gatesville, but his intelligence and curiosity led him to join the Navy where he worked as a radar specialist on reconnaissance aircraft in the early years of the Vietnam war. After discharge, he worked as an engineer at General Dynamics in Fort Worth, then completed a PhD in Physics from UT Southwestern, where he joined the faculty and taught doctoral candidates and radiology residents for over 25 years. He co-wrote a classic textbook, Christensen's Physics of Diagnostic Radiology, and went on to co-found BRIT systems, a medical imaging technology company based in Dallas. After meeting her on a blind date, Bob married his wife, Barbara, in Arlington in 1968 and he was a devoted husband for 47 years, loving father to his two sons, Robert, and Dan, and playful grandfather to Jack, Emma, Matthew, and Thomas. Bob was also a longtime volunteer, pack and troop leader with the Boy Scouts of America and helped to shape the lives of hundreds of youths. Although he never fully retired, late in life he felt drawn back to the Hill Country, and he and Barbara spent much of their time on their small ranch near Mineral Wells, with smart goats, mischievous donkeys, dumb cows, and a pair of neurotic canines. He is predeceased by his mother, Ima Faye Cockrell; father, Robert C. Murry, Sr.; and younger sister, Nita. Survivors: wife, Barbara; sons, Robert and Dan; grandchildren, Jack, Emma, Matthew, and Thomas; sisters, Gwen, Karen, and Sharla; brother, Phillip; and many nieces and nephews.
