John was born to the late Cleve John Scallan of Pineville, LA. and Rose Ellen VanAckeran of Seattle, Washington in 1939. He was the third of five children, Jerry, Anne, Morris, and Richard. John grew up hunting and riding horses with his friends from Catholic school. He joined the Army/National Guard, later moving to Fort Worth for a fresh start. There he met the love of his life, Brenda Garrison, whom he married in 1967.
While raising three children, Cliff, Angela, and D'Jauhn, John joined the Air Force Reserves and worked for the 301st Division at Carswell Air Force Base. Due to a life altering illness, John retired in 1998 and he stayed home to care for Brenda until her death in 2015. John was completely devoted to God, his wife, and his children. He loved old country and bluegrass music, hunting, and his "dumplin' pup" TeeShau.
