Jerry "Don" Johnson, 78, passed away Friday, July 22, 2016.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephen Catholic Church Chapel, 211 S. Main St. Weatherford, 76086.
Interment: Annetta Cemetery in Annetta.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at White's Funeral Home, 130 Houston Ave., Weatherford, 76086.
Jerry Don was born September 3, 1937 in Altus, Okla. to Tom and Bobbie Johnson. He moved to Weatherford at the age of 6. He attended T.W. Stanley Elementary, Weatherford Junior High, and Weatherford High School. Throughout his lifetime, he was a boy scout as well as a tremendous athlete. He was his high school's football team's quarterback, a star pole vaulter, and track star. He was the Dallas Morning News First Team All State Quarterback for Class 3A. He was State Champion Pole Vaulter in 1955, jumping 12 feet 10 inches.
He married Mary Elizabeth Slaton in 1961 and shortly after went to Fort Polk, Louisiana to serve in the U.S. Army. Jerry and Mary had their first child, Monica, in 1962 and their second, Angela, 1963. Jerry then went to work for Interstate Securities, which moved the family to many cities, finally settling in Mineral Wells in 1968. Mary started at Weatherford College, and then attended Tarleton State University, graduating in 1973 with a B.S. degree in Education.
Jerry went to work for Richardson Ford in Albuquerque where he obtained the title of manager and was over several dealerships. Monica graduated from Eastern New Mexico University and Angela graduated from University of New Mexico. Mary taught elementary school in Albuquerque for 25 years.
Jerry and Mary retired in 1999 to a ranch in Hico. They enjoyed the ranch and their grandchildren, Annie, a graduate of University of Texas, and Michael, a graduate of Texas A&M University. A move to Hamilton resulted from Jerry's decline in health. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Bobbie Johnson.
Survivors: wife of 55 years, Mary Elizabeth Slaton Johnson; daughters, Monica Harwig and husband, John, and Angela Johnson and husband, Kevin Higgins; grandchildren, Michael Harwig and fiance, Toni, and Annie Harwig; sister, Hazel Jones; brother, Tommy Johnson; and other family members and friends.
