She was born on January 25, 1935, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the daughter of Max Letton Hill and Agnes Staley Eddins Hill. Maxine graduated from Midland High School, Class of 1952, where she was a cheerleader and was voted the "Friendliest Girl" in her senior class. After graduating from high school, she attended North Texas State College. At eighteen, she left college to care for her mother who had terminal cancer and to help maintain the family home for her father and her younger sister. She returned to college, but this time she enrolled at Texas Tech University. While at Tech, she met the love of her life, Stennis Wayne Carter, on a blind date. They were married on February 18, 1955 and shared 51 happy years together before he passed away on April 22, 2006. Shortly after they married, they moved to Washington, D.C. where Wayne was stationed at the Pentagon. After his military service, they moved to Hobbs, N.M., Mineral Wells, TX and then made their home in Weatherford, TX. During those years, they started a family and she devoted her time, love and energy to raising their children. As their children started to get older, she decided to return to college and finish her degree. She earned an Associate of Arts degree at Weatherford College in 1970, and later graduated from Tarleton State University in 1976, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She was a beloved art teacher at Weatherford Middle School and later worked for Wayne Carter Oil Company, the family business. Maxine was a devoted Christian and loved her church family at First Baptist Church. Year after year, she used her artistic gifts to design, plan, paint and build pageant sets for Christmas and Easter programs. She also taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for many years, sharing her faith with generations of children. She enjoyed shopping, playing bridge, cooking and painting but most of all she loved spending time with her family and friends. Of all her accomplishments, the one she was most proud of, as noted in her journal, was "raising four normal children that brought her happiness (foremost), headaches and heartaches on occasion." Her biggest blessing was being called Mimi and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also a cherished and loving aunt to her many nieces and nephews. Her big heart loved beyond her family and many people in Parker County considered her a "second mom". She is preceded in death by her parents, Max and Agnes Hill; her husband, Wayne Carter; and her sister, Jean Burton. Surviving is her sister, Mary Ann Hill Kirkpatrick and brother-in-law, James, of Tyler; sister-in-law, Virginia Carter Adams of Plano; her four children: sons, Gary Carter and wife, Suzi, of Weatherford, Mike Carter and wife, Nika, of Weatherford; daughters, Sandra Kurosky and husband, Bobby, of Weatherford, and Christy Koski and husband, John, of Wichita Falls; grandchildren, Josh Carter, Jessica Galloway, Jarrett Carter, Shelby Carter, Amber Coker, Brandon Scoggins, Cameron Scoggins, Jennifer Kurosky, Chris Kurosky, Carley Koski and Carter Koski; and thirteen great-grandchildren and one arriving in June.
