Barbara Ann Smith, retired executive secretary for Fort Worth Star Telegram passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2020. Barbara was born Barbara Ann Bittner in New Haven, CT. on October 31, 1938 to Charles and Elizabeth Bittner. She grew up in Guilford, a little town outside New Haven, graduated from high school in 1956. Four months after graduation, she married Claud Lee Smith and moved to Texas the same day. Enjoyed a long career of 30 years with the Star-Telegram, she retired in 2001. Never one to sit still, she immediately got involved in volunteering at two hospitals, one in Fort Worth and one in Azle where she lived. She also joined the Eagle Mountain Garden Club, serving two terms as president, and as a member of a chapter of the American Sewing Guild, she made many, many baby quilts to be given away to Cook Children’s Hospital and JPS for needy children, That was a project she really took pleasure in doing, Traveling was also something she enjoyed with her husband and friends and got to do a lot of it after retiring. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Claude; only sister, Marie; and brother, Ed. She leaves behind her son, Lee Smith; sisters-in-law, Joan Mancuiso of Florida and Shirley Smith of Argyle; several nieces and nephews.
