Bobby Wray Pope

Bobby Wray Pope was born on January 28, 1931 to Emma Rebecca and Albert Pope, and died at home on September 24, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.  He was the youngest of three children and lived much of his childhood in Weatherford, Texas, where he attended Weatherford High School, and helped his parents and sisters operate the Kozy Kove cafe.  In December 1947, he met the love of his life, Marjorie Aline Woods and they were married ten days later. During the next thirteen years they would have four children, Donna, Cookie, Bridgett and Bobby, Jr.While Marjorie was the first love of his life the second was his work as a Dallas Police Officer.  He joined the department in 1954 and rose to the rank of Assistant Chief of Police before retiring.   During his early years with the department, he earned a BS from the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University, being the first in his family to receive a college degree.  He worked in all but one area within the department, but was very partial to his time spent in the homicide division, under the leadership of Captain Will Fritz, where he was a proud member of the Captain’s “Cracker Jacks”.  He loved Dallas and he respected the officers within the Dallas Police Department beyond words. He retired in 1979.After retiring he began a private security company in which he was actively engaged until 2002.  He also served another four years in law enforcement from 1981-1984  as Chief Deputy, with the Dallas Sheriff’s Department.Bobby was a member of East Dallas Masonic Lodge No. 1200.  He was a 32 Degree Scottish Rite Mason, and he also belonged to Hella Shrine Temple.Marj and Bobby moved back to Weatherford in 1992, where he enjoyed building their retirement home on a small lake he had fished on as a child.  He loved having the entire family there, and watching Marj and the grandchildren and great-grandchildren feed the catfish.  He also loved his sweet cat, Sometime and gave her a final snuggle in his last minutes.Bobby was preceded in death by his parents; and his two sisters, Ottolene Walker, and Wanda Jacobs.  He is survived by Marj, his wife of seventy years; and their four children, Donna Pope, Cookie Benson (Martti), Bridgett Daniels and Bobby Pope, Jr. (Jerrie); his seven grandchildren, Drake McLemore (Sheri), Douglas Benson, Alex Benson, Clint Thurman (Misty), Tyler Daniels (Alyssa), Jessica Pope, and Joshua Pope; and eight great-grandchildren, Hunter McLemore (Suzy), Christian McLemore, Baleigh, Harleigh, Marleigh Rae, Clint Jr., and Hank Thurman and Kayden Nelson; nephews, Bill Farmer (DeDe) and William Jacobs; and niece, Sherry Dickerson (Erwin).The family wishes to thank members of Central Christian Church who visited regularly, and the many doctors, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and assistants at Weatherford Regional Hospital, Willow Park Rehabilitation Hospital and Klarus Home Health, who lovingly cared for Bobby during his lengthy illness.  A special thanks goes to Dr. Steven Newman who cared for Bobby’s big and generous heart for the last 20 years.  Hugs and our love go to each of you.Visitation will be Wednesday, September 27, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at White’s Funeral Home located at 130 Houston Avenue, Weatherford, Texas 76086.  Service will be Thursday, September 28, 2017 at Central Christian Church located at 1602 South Main Street, Weatherford, Texas 76086 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at East Greenwood Cemetery in Weatherford.
