Cora Beth Harmer

July 10, 1937 — March 26, 2020

Cora Beth Harmer passed away peacefully of natural causes on March 26, 2020, in her home with family at her side at the age of 82 years old. She was born in Salt Lake City on July 10, 1937, the oldest of 4 children born to Howard and Myrth Allen Hassell. She was a loving daughter, devoted sister, loyal wife, and a doting grandmother. Her life’s mission was service and compassion toward all those that came into her sphere of influence, whether stranger or loved one. She spent her youth in Salt Lake City with many memorable trips to her father’s mine near Eureka and memorable summers in Monticello. After attending East High School she attended the University of Utah where she first pursued a nursing degree but decided to expedite her graduation by earning a Bachelor of Science and Teaching Certificate, in order to start working while her sweetheart was in Law School. She was sealed to her eternal sweetheart, Roy Howard Harmer in the Salt Lake Temple on Sept. 4, 1958. She and Howard lived in many locations during their marriage, but special memories were made as a young couple living in Hawaii before they started their family. All 7 of their children were born either in California or Chicago, completing their family in Atherton, CA, going through the majority of the teen years in Holladay, Utah before heading to the Seattle area. The call to serve as missionaries together for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was a dream realized when they faithfully completed 2 missions, the first serving as hosts at the church history sites in Palmyra, New York and the second in the New York, Buffalo District as Temple Activation Missionaries. Serving as an ordinance worker in The Dallas Temple was a gift she experienced in her later years where she drew even closer to her Savior and felt His love through those ordinances. Throughout her life, she answered the call to serve whether it was a primary worker, organist/pianist, Ward Relief Society President, Stake Primary/Relief Society President or PTA President. She dedicated her life to raising her family based on the principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ and sharing His love with everyone. She championed those with learning disabilities and helped them discover they had talents of great measure and only had learning differences that made them even more remarkable. Countless hours were lovingly spent tutoring her children and grandchildren ensuring they would not only succeed academically but rise to be strong leaders. She was always available and called on many times to share uplifting stories and experiences to help others or lend her heart and ears to listen to those in need. Her home had always been a place of warmth, fun, laughter, and refuge from the storms of the world. Cora-Beth had a great love and appreciation of music from an early age and honed her beautiful voice talent in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir as one of their youngest members and privileged to share in this experience with her own mother at the same time. Her musical gifts were shared with her children and each one developed a special love of music, which always invited the Holy Spirit into their lives. Through the musical tutoring of her children, many have been blessed to feel the Savior's love through the music that the family has shared freely. She was a glorious, beloved wife & mother who never had to reinvent herself because she was always who she really was - a beautiful daughter of God. Survived by: R. Howard Harmer (Michelle), Cynthia Findlay (David), Shauna Harmer, Sarah Otte (Chris), Jon-Paul Harmer (Kimberly), Larry Harmer (Elizabeth), Sheryl Landstrom (Jason), Sister Marion Pack (Russell), Brother Lewis Hassell (Mary Bliss), 24 Grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by Howard, her husband of 45 years, & her brother Jay Hassell (Brenda). As a sign of the times, a private virtual celebration of her life was held, March 29, 2020. A private family graveside service and interment at Memory Gardens of the Valley Perpetual Care Cemetery will be held on March 31, 2020.
