David Charles Usrey was born to Audrey and Dewey Usrey on March 21, 1929 in Dallas, Texas. He opened his eyes in Glory on Father’s Day, June 21, 2020. David was married to Mary Foster on August 6, 1950. They grew up, met, and married at First Baptist Dallas where he served as a Deacon for many years. Together they had three children: the late Diane Elizabeth Salo, Debra Jane Haynie of Aledo, TX, and the late David Alan Usrey. Dr. Usrey served in the Army from February, 1955 to July, 1961 where he completed his medical internship and residencies in pediatrics. Following his military service, he opened a pediatric practice in Garland, Texas. After almost 30 years in private practice, he transitioned from treating children to treating young adults and became the Medical Director of SMU’s Medical Clinic from 1989 to 1998. After retiring, David continued serving the Lord through medicine. He worked at the Dallas Life Foundation’s medical clinic for the homeless, a clinic which he helped establish. He also served with the Texas Baptist Builders and Texas Baptist Men in relief work throughout the United States and across the world. He took mission trips with Young Life as well as with First Baptist Dallas. His medical and evangelical mission work through these various organizations took him to Sri Lanka, Albania, Peru, England, Jamaica (7 times), India (3 times), Ukraine (3 times), Russia (2 times) and Mexico (many times!) Dr. David, as many called him, was a poet, a published composer, a cellist, a storyteller and writer, a vegetable gardener, a canoe and sailboat enthusiast, a singer, an avid snow skier, and the best pediatrician ever (according to his patients!). He exuded every fruit of the Spirit – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. He loved the way 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 tells us to love. He was the embodiment of the godly man described in Psalm 112. Dr. David is preceded in death by his wife, Mary, in 2007; his daughter, Diane Salo, in 2010; and his son, David Usrey, in 2012. He is survived by his daughter, Debby Haynie, and her husband, Mike Haynie, and by 8 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. A family-only service will be livestreamed on Friday, June 26th, at 10:30 a.m. at birchman.org/live or on Facebook at Debby Usrey Haynie.
