John Granato passed away peacefully on December 15, 2023, surrounded by his beloved family, leaving behind a legacy of love and resilience. Born on February 15, 1953, in Flushing, New York, John exemplified unwavering strength and grace throughout his life.
John's educational journey began at Loyola School in New York, graduating in 1971, followed by a degree in education from Saint Louis University in 1975 and a master's in psychology from NYU. He was a dedicated special education teacher at Albany Public Schools and a compassionate clinical therapist at Berkshire Medical Center for over three decades, touching countless lives with his wisdom, empathy, and patience.
John's zest for life was infectious. He found joy in cooking, especially his beloved pasta dishes, and sharing them with loved ones. A true adventurer, John loved traveling with his partner, Kipley, and took countless RV trips across the country and traveled the world to incredible destinations. He also spent several joyous years living in Hawaii, embracing the island's aloha spirit, which deeply influenced his outlook on life. A family man and wonderful father, John's warmth and love were felt by all who knew him.
Despite battling multiple myeloma for 18 years and enduring a stem cell transplant, multiple back surgeries, and immunotherapy, John remained a beacon of positivity and hope. He was a fighter, never complaining or giving up, with his faith and positive spirit deeply embedded into his being. His resilience and strength in fighting cancer for so long were nothing short of amazing and a miracle.
John was truly remarkable, inspiring everyone around him with his courage, kindness, and passion for life. His enthusiasm for helping others through his wisdom and knowledge left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
May John rest in eternal peace, his aloha spirit and enduring legacy of kindness and compassion forever remember.
He is survived by his devoted spouse, Kipley Parrot; his beloved children, Catherine Colson and her husband, Shawn Colson; Anthony Granato; and Elizabeth Granato; his former spouse, Patricia Verdi; his grandchild, Savannah Colson. He also leaves behind many dear friends and family members who will forever hold him in their hearts.
