Mary was born on July 08, 1942, in Wichita Falls, to James Lewis and Viola Marie (Brock) Starr. She was the first born of 2 children with a younger brother, James Richard Starr. She graduated from Wichita Falls High School in 1960. She obtained her cosmetology license from Bud Hall’s Beauty School in 1961.
She met and fell in love with her husband and our Dad, Daniel Chapman, the love of her life, while working at the Grant Street Drive-In movie concession stand. He was a young airman in the Air Force stationed at Sheppard AFB. They married June 17, 1960. In 1961 they welcomed their first child, daughter Dana, and later their son, Jeffrey. Her faith in the Lord, and her family, were the most important aspects of her life.
While being a military spouse with her husband in the Air Force for 30 years, they made and maintained many life-long friendships. They were stationed at Wichita Falls, TX; Lajes Field, Azores; San Antonio, TX; Maryland; Incirlik Turkey; Wichita Falls, TX; Goldsboro, NC; then returning to San Antonio, TX where they retired. In 1988 Mary & Dan moved to Azle, Texas, where they joined other family members. Mary served as a Girl Scout Troop Leader, a member of Beta Sigma Phi, worked for Wichita Falls ISD School Food Service, and USAA proofreading accident claims. She devoted her retirement years to taking care of her family. Mary and Dan became members of Holy Trinity Catholic Church where she had been involved in the Women’s Guild, Choir and food pantry. Mary enjoyed researching genealogy and would often help others when they had questions about their own families. She loved watching British comedies, gameshows, court and paternity shows, and following the royal British family. She especially enjoyed ice cream, Limeades and Red Draws. Mary was often in attendance at her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s school and extracurricular activities. She was an extremely loving and compassionate woman, who never met a stranger. Her kind words and hugs were meant from the heart. She always looked forward to lunches with her cousin, Sherry Kilgo & husband, Ermon. Sherry was always like a sister to her.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Ret. CMSgt Daniel Chapman; brother, James Richard Star; and her parents, James and Viola Starr.
She is survived by her daughter, Dana Montgomery & husband, Troy of Azle, Texas; and her son, Jeffrey Chapman & wife, Christie of St. Cloud, FL.; 6 grandchildren, Crystal Colley & husband, Cory, Heather Collins & husband, Ryan, Jeffrey Chapman II, James Chapman, Nick Padgett, Sydney Rutledge & husband, Justin; 4 great-grandchildren, Celsea & Caitlyn Colley, Haylee & Raelyn Collins; precious cousins, nieces, and nephews, and Brother-in-Law Robert Chapman of Worcester, Massachusetts.
The family would like to express our thanks to Healing Hands Home Health (Kelli), Three Oaks Hospice (Tiffany, Megan, Leila, Eboni) and the staff at Azle Manor. Your kindness, care and concern for Mom’s comfort is extremely appreciated.
