Robert was born August 28, 1935 in Mount Airy, North Carolina, son of Robert A. and Daisy (Horton) Jarvis. He grew up in Mount Airy and graduated from Mount Airy High School. He was an athlete in high school and worked several jobs to help his family. He delivered the daily newspapers, ran the projector at the movie theater, and worked at his Uncle Jim’s catering business every summer with his sister Margaret. They grew up with very little money and had no car. They walked everywhere.
When Robert graduated High School, he joined the United States Marine Corps. He served for 21 years and retired honorably with the rank of Master Sergeant. He was an expert marksman with both the rifle and pistol. Robert received several medals including the National Defense Service Award and Good Conduct Award.
After retiring from the Marines, Robert received a degree in Drafting from the University of Texas at Arlington. He graduated with honors and as a member of Phi Theta Kappa. He worked as a draftsman, creating technical drawings for machines, aircraft, and other projects for REI, Lockheed Martin, and Boeing.
Robert was a member of North Irving Baptist Church. He volunteered in the Church Coffee Ministry, always greeting church members with fresh coffee and snacks. He took great pride in serving others.
Robert loved attending all of the sporting events for his sons and his grandchildren. He was a talented artist, liked to play cards, and loved gospel and classical music.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his son, Robert Anderson Jarvis, IV.
Survivors include his son, John Jarvis and his wife, Jennifer; granddaughters, Alyssa Harrington, Karli Jarvis, and Lauren St. Peters; grandsons, Caden Jarvis, Jerret Jarvis, and Colton St. Peters; great-grandson, Lawsen Harrington; great-granddaughter, Navy Jarvis; sister, Margaret Smith; former spouse, Karen Finger Jarvis; and a host of extended family members; and a lifetime of friends.
Like the meaning for the Marine Corps motto, “Semper Fidelis”, Robert was always faithful to his family, his country, and to our Lord, Jesus Christ.
